Brushing and Flossing
Maintaining oral hygiene with braces is crucial for healthy teeth and gums. Here’s how to brush and floss effectively:
Brush for two minutes after meals with a soft-bristled, small-headed toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Consider a powered toothbrush. Use gentle circular motions at a 45-degree angle to the gum line, focusing on areas around brackets and appliances. Don’t forget to clean the chewing surfaces and the inside of your front teeth with short back-and-forth motions.
Flossing after meals is vital. Use a floss threader or orthodontic floss to get behind each wire. Wrap the floss around your fingers, leaving a few inches taut. Slide it gently between teeth, reaching beneath the gum line. Repeat for all teeth, or try a water flosser if regular flossing is difficult.
